Financial Aid Facts For Aerospace Students

The University of North Dakota Student Financial Aid Office will consider appropriate flight costs in determining a student's financial need. In order to consider these costs, certain conditions must be met. The current policies and procedures used by the Student Financial Aid Office are listed below.

Apply for Admission

You must be a regularly admitted, degree-seeking student to qualify for financial aid.

Complete the FAFSA

UND utilizes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal Application as its application for all financial aid. The aid available includes grants, work study, and loan programs. The FAFSA is available from your local high school, postsecondary school,or the Federal Student Aid Information Center (1-800-4-FED-AID). The FAFSA can also be requested from the Student Financial Aid Office, or students can apply directly by using FAFSA on the World Wide Web.

The address is: www.fafsa.ed.gov .The FAFSA must be received by the processing center before March 15 to meet the priority funding date.

We recommend that students also request The Student Guide - Financial Aid for the current academic year. This guide details the various Federal Student Financial Assistance (SFA) Programs and how to apply for them.

Awarding Process

The Student Financial Aid Office will award any financial aid the student is eligible for once they receive the student's application information from the Federal processing center. All incoming freshman and transfer students will recieve a paper award letter directing them to go to Your Electronic Award (YEA) to accept or decline aid. Any revised award notifications will be sent to your University e-mail account (U-mail). This e-mail notification will contain a direct link to YEA. Students can also access YEA at any time by going to www.financialaid.und.edu . Please send any other documents requested in a timely manner. Financial aid disbursements could be delayed. For further details, please refer to the brochures and information sheets published by the Student Financial Aid Office.

Loan Processing Information

Loan Processing Information: Any funds in excess of the amount owed to the University at the time of disbursement are considered "excess aid" and are either released to the student's UND PrideCard   Excess money from a Federal Parent PLUS loan will be mailed as a check to the parent borrower.

Applying for UND Scholarships

If the student is interested in a general UND scholarship, visit www.financialaid.und.edu for more details. The priority application deadline for freshman scholarships is February 5. After February 5 the priority application deadline for transfer scholarships is April 15. Scholarship information is also available through the Office of Enrollment Services (1-800-Call-UND).

UND Aviation Scholarships

Each year approximately $300,000 in UND Aviation scholarships and training awards are granted to students enrolled at UND majoring in aviation. Scholarship applications will be available for enrolled aviation students in early February, are due by mid- March and awarded in April. Awards are based on academic merit, leadership, flight achievement, and other attributes as specified by the sponsor. Students are therefore encouraged to pick up applications when spring semester begins.

Two significant scholarship programs are available for all students (including freshmen and transfer students) majoring in professional flight. The Odegard Scholarship program, provided by the James Ray Foundation which is part of the spring scholarship program, and the Clay Lacy Professional Pilot Scholarship in conjunction with the EAA Aviation Foundation, are awards based on academic merit, "a passion for flying", and service. The application process for this scholarship happens in the fall and is applied for through student services. Second, The Odegard Scholarship program, provided by the James Ray Foundation are administered by the Aviation Department and awarded in the spring. For additional information about the Aviation Department Scholarships, contact the Odegard College Office of Aviation at (701)777-2834 or (800)258-1525 extension 2834.

Flight Costs

Flight costs are not included in tuition or fees. They are determined on an hourly basis for aircraft and flight instruction, and are in addition to tuition, fees, and any other incidental expenses that are normally charged during registration. Flight costs may be added to the estimated Cost of Attendance if the student is a declared aviation major (or pre-commercial aviation, pre-air traffic control, pre-aviation system management or pre-flight education) enrolled in a flight course required for a major.

The Student Financial Aid Office will send the student a revised award notice if there is a change in awards after the student registers for a flight course. If the student has already been awarded the maximum aid, or if the aid that has been offered is not sufficient to cover costs, there are Parent PLUS loans or several alternative (commercial) loans for which the student may apply. For more details please visit www.simpletuition.com/und .

Student may apply for any additional loans one semester at a time, since flight costs are only considered after registration each semester. Loan applications must be submitted to the Student Financial Aid Office prior to August 1, but not before June, for fall semester or December 15 for spring semester to ensure timely processing and receipt of loan funds. Information on the commercial loans may be obtained at the Student Financial Aid Office or visit www.financialaid.und.edu .

Current Aviation Financial Policy

Students enrolling in flight courses are required to deposit money into their flight accounts on a regular basis, to cover incurred flight costs. Deposits may be made at the UND Student Account Services office (tellers hours are 8:00- 4:30, Monday through Friday) or on-line on Campus Connection. Flight deposits will be available for use the next business day in the aviation account.

If the flight account falls below $200 at any time, students may not be allowed to dispatch their flight until the balance is above $200. Students are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to make deposits into their flight accounts. Students receiving Financial Aid to assist with their flight costs will be allowed to begin flying before the aid is received. This is done by the student requesting to be placed on "financial agreement". The amount of aid in excess of tuition, fees, housing, etc is entered into the aviation computer system. If excess aid has not been received, but has been approved by UND Student Financial Aid and lender, contact Dotty at 701-777-3586 or Peggy at 701-777-3218 to discuss being put on agreement.

2009-2011 UND Academic Catalog

Students may refer to pages 8-12 of the 2009-2011 UND Academic Catalog for tuition, fees and financial information. Current policies for The Department of Aviation can be found on pages 79-85.
